I have previously written about what alcohol hangover is, causes of hangover, how to prevent hangover and treat hangover. The current ost is about effect of a popular Chinese Medicine remedy for preventing hangover.
Acanthopanax senticosus (currently known as Eleutherococcus senticosus) is popularly known as Siberian ginseng. While roots are the most commonly used components for medicinal purposes, sometimes, flowers are employed for therapeutic purposes as well. It is widely used in Chinese medicine for increasing ‘energy”.
Dr. Bang and colleagues studied the effect of extract of Acanthopanax senticosus on alcohol levels as well as the resulting alcohol hangover.
Overview of Ginseng Alcohol Hangover Study
- Randomized double-blind placebo controlled crossover design
- 1.75 g/kg of pure alcohol was given to human subjects
- The extract or placebo were given before and and after drinking alcohol
- Blood levels for alcohol were undertaken
- Subjects filled out a Acute Hangover Scale checklist on the next day
Results of Ginseng Alcohol Hangover Study
- There was no effect of the plant extract on the alcohol levels as compared to placebo.
- Alcohol intake had significant effect on levels of glucose and C-reactive protien or CRP (maker of inflammation) in blood. This effect was ameliorated by the plant extract
- Plant extract had beneficial effect on several of features of hangover including tired, dizziness, headache, and nausea, stomach upset.
Conclusion of Ginseng Alcohol Hangover Study
Acanthopanax senticosus exract is effective in reducing alcohol hangover without any effect on alcohol levels. The mechanism of action involves in part by reducing the pro-inflammation effect of alcohol in the body.
Of note, other forms of ginseng like red ginseng have been shown to reduce hangover.
Commonly used dose
While powdered root has been used from 1-4 g per day, the dose for extracts should not exceed 1 g/day
