Effect of NR supplement on Alzheimer’s
Gong and colleagues studied the effect of NR supplementation on cognitive function in mice. NAD decrease in amyloid toxin in Alzheimer’s disease.
Methods
Mice received NR supplement at a dose of 250 mg/kg/day (equivalent to 1300 mg/kg/d in humans) NR. The control mice receive salt water. Treatments were continued till the age of 10-11 months of age.
Cognitive testing: Object recognition protocol was used to assess cognitive function.
Test: Mice were allowed to explore an object. Subsequently, the mice returned and exposed to the familiar object and a new object. The time spent on the new object was compared between the two groups.
Results
- NR treated mice had higher levels of NAD in brain suggesting it energizes the energy machinery of the brain.
- NR treated mice had superior cognitive performance. Specifically, the NR mice had 63% better chance of recognizing the new object.
- NR treatment reduced the toxic amyloid production in brain as compared to controls.
- Some of the genes involved in energy metabolism are suppressed in Alzheimer’s. Treatment of the mice with NR resulted in stimulation of these genes.
