Just as in the gut, there are bacterial communities present in lungs and its air-passages. The type of bacteria can vary with the different kinds of pollutants that the person is exposed to. The bacteria in respiratory system are different from those found in the mouth.
These bacterial communities:
- Affect the body’s ability to metabolize environmental toxins that the human body is exposed to through air pollution.
- Play a role in non-cancerous lung diseases like asthma and COPD.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Certain factors known to increase risk for lung cancer:
- Presence of gum disease or gingivitis is associated with increased risk of lung cancer suggesting a role of microbiome present in the mouth.
- Likewise, history of prior lung infections, COPD, chronic bronchitis etc. increases risk.
- Tuberculosis increases risk of lung cancer even among non-smokers by about 70 percent whereas history of pneumonia increases risk by 43%.
Lung-microbiome Lung-Cancer study
Hosgood and colleagues studied the mouth washings and sputum samples from subjects with and without lung cancer.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Bacterial diversity among cases and controls was similar in samples from oral cavity, but significantly different bacterial patterns obtained from sputum samples.
- Sputum samples revealed greater numbers of Granulicatella (6.1 vs. 2.0%), Abiotrophia (1.5 vs. 0.085%), and Streptococcus (40.1 vs. 19.8%) type of bacteria as compared to controls. It is noteworthy that these bacteria are involved in variety of infections including nervous system, sinus infections etc. (Granulicatella), aortitis (Abiotrophia) and chronic lung infections and pneumonia (Streptococcus).
- While not significantly different, the results from oral washes showed decreased levels of four types of bacteria in lung cancer.
Potential role for inflammation
Above data suggests that chronic inflammation may be the common link between the presence of these infection prone bacteria and the pathway to cancer.
The exact mechanism remains to be established. It is possible that damage to the lung wall barrier leads to inflammation and the cancer processes. Converse could also be true. Another possibility is that both mechanisms work in a vicious cycle.
