Buckwheat is not a grain but a seed. It is botanically characterized as a fruit. It originated in southeast Asia 8,000 years ago and then spread across the Asia to Europe.
The name buckwheat is a misnomer since it is not related to wheat. The name owes its origin to its seeds that are tr1angular and that it is used like wheat.

How buckwheat is consumed
- The groats can be eaten raw or cooked.
- Buckwheat may be consumed as porridge, noodles and pancakes etc.
- Buckwheat is one of the sources for glutenfree beer in lieu of barley.
In India, when people are on grain-free fast for religious reasons, it is customary to consume buckwheat foods instead since it is not a grain.

F. Lowering high blood pressure
Results of studies from Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shinshu University, Minamiminowa in Japan suggest that fermentation of buckwheat sprouts yields potent antihypertensive compounds.
G. Gastrointestinal problems
Buckwheat compounds have been used to treat abdominal pain and dysentery in traditional Chinese medicine. Dr. Liu and colleagues from the Department of Liver Disease, The Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Jiangsu, Nanjing in China have demonstrated that meisn extract reduces inflammation, intestinal permeability or leaky gut as well as susceptibility to pain in animal models of irritable bowel syndrome.
Caution
If you are on glutenfree (GF) diet, be sure that the processed food you are buying does not contain glutenous foods like wheat. Some people are allergic to buckwheat and as such must not consume it.
