Grapefruit is healthy and grapefruit diet fad occurred in early part of last century. Is it myth or does it have scientific basis that grapefruit can ameliorate diet induced obesity.
Animal studies on positive effects of grapefruit:
One of the compounds in grapefruit juice is nootkatone. Studies by Murase and colleagues have shown that consumption of nootkatone containing diet over long term by experimental animal models reduces weight gain induced by high fat and high sugar diet. This is accompanied by decreased abdominal fat. Remarkably, these beneficial changes are accompanied by improved physical performance, exercise capacity and endurance.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Human data:
Ken Fujioka from Scripps clinic has shown that grapefruit ingestion results in significant weight loss and improved insulin resistance as compared to placebo.
Molecular mechanism of grapefruit:
Nootkatone, contained in grapefruit enhances energy metabolism via stimulation of AMPK in the skeletal muscles and liver.
Do you enjoy grapefruit and believe in its weight loss capability? Do you or someone you know has been on grapefruit diet? Please share your thoughts.
