Duffy and colleagues examined the trends and patterns of beverage consumption among adults based on nationally representative Nationwide Food Consumption Surveys (1965, 1977 to 1978) and the National Health and Nutrition Surveys (1988 to 1994, 1999 to 2002).
There was an increase in percentage of calories from beverages from 11.8% in 1965 to 21% to 2002. Beverage patterns in 2002 were predominantly by a greater number of beverages as reflected by an increase in alcohol, soda, and diet beverages.
The authors concluded that an addressing the increased use of high calorie sweetened, nutrient-deficient beverages would be an important tool for weight management.
