There is growing amount of literature studying impact of elevated ambient temperature and mortality. Basu and colleagues from California examined the epidemiological data published from January 2001 to December 2008.They excluded studies associated with heat waves as were studies focusing on effect of cold temperature. Thirty-six studies were analyzed.
After adjusting for confounding factors like ozone, the authors found an independent association between temperature and mortality. Elevated temperature increases risk of mortality related to cardiovascular, respiratory, cerebrovascular, diseases. Blacks, women, children and elderly and persons of lower socioeconomic status were more vulnerable.
