Dr. Estrada and colleagues from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut recently (Journal of Biological Chemistry Sept 2006) published their findings about the deleterious effects of high testosterone on brain cells. They found that elevated testosterone leads to death of neurons. This of course would have long term effects on brain function.
Thus both too little and too much of testosterone is bad for you. Be careful before jumping on the steroid bandwagon for building muscles.
In case the ladies are wondering about effect of estrogen, well, evidence suggests that estrogen may be neuroprotective.
A note of caution: This study was not based on a human trial but an in vitro study in the laboratory.
