- Kim and colleagues investigated the effect and relationship the endothelial function and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) by green tea consumption in chronic smokers. This is essentially examining the effect of green tea on function of blood vessels. For example, the numbers of circulating EPCs is inversely correlated with chronic smoking and endothelial dysfunction. They demonstrated that green tea catechin improved endothelial dysfunction in chronic smokers.
-
These investigators studied 20 young healthy smokers. Vascular functions were assessed by flow-mediated endothelium dependent vasodilation (FMD) of the brachial artery via ultrasound as well as the # of EPCs in peripheral blood. Measurements were done at baseline and then two weeks after consumption of 8g/day of green tea.
Circulating EPCs as well as cultured EPCs were increased after 2 weeks of green tea consumption. Similarly FMD was also improved. In fact, EPC levels were inversely correlated with the number of cigarettes smoked. There was also direct correlation between FMD and EPC counts both before and after treatment.
The authors concluded that even a short-term administration of green tea consumption results in rapid improvement of EPC levels and FMD. As such, green tea may have potential to prevent future cardiovascular events in chronic smokers.
Caution: Because of its effects on platelets, it should not be used during periods of ulcer bleeds etc and should be discontinued prior to most surgeries.
