Gas is ubiquitous and that includes our digestive system.
Normal amount of gas and gas expulsions (flatus)
An average adult produces one to three pints of intestinal gas everyday and the number of flatus expulsions may vary from 14-23 per day.
The food you eat and the intestinal bacteria play a pivotal role in amount and aroma of your flatus/flatulence. Dietary adjustments help those with intestinal gas problems.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
Do older folks produce more gas?
Many elderly tend to complain of increased frequency of flatus. However, they usually pass smaller amounts of gas with greater frequency since their ability to hold gas may be impaired.
Composition of intestinal gas
About 99% of the gas is composed of nitrogen, hydrogen and methane. The composition of intestinal gas also varies depending upon the part of the gut.
Stomach gas
In the stomach, gas is usually high in oxygen and methane and represents the swallowed air. In upright position, most of swallowed air is expelled through the mouth and does not appear in flatus. However, in lying position, some of the swallowed air may go downstream.

Flatus gas
Much of the colonic gas (and expelled in flatus) is produced in the colon as a result of fermentation of unabsorbed carbohydrates by intestinal bacteria. Flatus is low in oxygen with relatively higher level of methane. Most of the carbon dioxide on the other hand gets absorbed in the small intestine.
Complaint of gas problem versus amount of intestinal gas
The volume of intestinal gas is usually around 150-250 ml although it may rarely be as high as 1000 ml. The volume of gas produced generally is similar in people who complain of increased gas versus those who don't.
Flatus aroma/odor
Most of the intestinal gas is odorless. The foul odor arises from trace amounts of sulfur containing gases arising as a result of bacterial fermentation.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
How does intestinal gas produce symptoms?
The symptoms of "gas" may arise because of gas trapped in loops of bowel especially at sharp curves/angles or increased sensitivity or awareness. Irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia and "intestinal gas" are associated with increased awareness. Food related excess gas may occur in lactose intolerance and intolerance to other sugars like fructose or sorbitol.
How to reduce intestinal gas: In nutshell, try low FODMAP diet. Detalls on FODMAP diet and alternatives are in a separate post on this blog.
