Literature is gradually accumulating that the long-term ingestion of certain probiotics is protective against a variety of infections.
In the current study, Doctors DeVrese and colleagues from Federal Research Center of Nutrition and Food in Germany looked at the role of probiotic ingestion on prevention of upper respiratory infections (common cold, influenza). They published their findings in the journal Vaccine.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
These investigators studied the effect of long term consumption of probiotics lactobacilli and bifidobacteria in a randomized controlled fashion during two winter/spring periods. 479 subjects participated in the study. All subjects received vitamins plus minerals with or without probiotics.
The authors found that while the incidence of viral respiratory infection was not affected, the duration were markedly reduced in the probiotic group. In fact, the probiotics reduced the duration of sickness almost 2 days (average 7.0 days versus 8.9 days). There was also reduction in severity of symptoms.
Remember however, not every type of probiotic bacteria works against everything. They are specific just like antibiotics for infections.
Of note, Dr. Minocha's article on preventative benefits from probiotics was published in the journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice.
