Obesity and viral infections
Increasing amount of evidence is emerging that obesity is not just an interplay of diet and genetics. A role for common viral infections has been postulated. Studies done on animals like chicken and mice infected with human Adenovirus certainly suggest so. And this fat (adiposity) effect is not limited to one single type of Adenovirus either.
Is It Leaky Gut or Leaky Gut Syndrome?
What is Adenovirus?
It is a family of viruses which usually infects young kids. It occurs mostly as upper respiratory infection but may also cause digestive, urinary and neurological problems. Most infections resolve on their own although rarely they can be fatal.
Adenovirus pro-obesity theory
The recent study by Dr. Whigham and colleagues lends further support to the hypothesis of pro-obesity effects of some of these Adenoviral infections. There is a silver lining though. Some of these viral infections including some adenoviruses also reduces serum cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels.
Study of effect of virus in chickens
Dr. Whigham and colleagues inoculated chicken with different kinds of Adenoviruses. They monitored their food intake for 3.5 weeks and then the animals were sacrificed.

Results of adenovirus infection on body fat
The authors found that visceral fat as well as total body fat were increased in the Ad-37 virus group. Similarly, the body was weight was also higher than the controls despite the fact that there was no difference in food intake.
Effect of adeno virus on cholesterol
In case of Ad-37 virus, serum cholesterol was increased while reducing the triglyceride levels. The other viruses tested did not affect the cholesterol levels.
It is interesting that the effect of adenovirus Ad-37 on serum cholesterol is opposite of the effect of another human Adenovirus (Ad-36) which actually reduces serum cholesterol.
So what are your thoughts now about people who claim they don't eat much but still gain weight or can't lose excess weight? I would love to hear from you.
