Botulinum toxin or botox has been gaining increasing popularity as a cosmetic intervention for wrinkles in recent years. Even botox parties and get-togethers are held!
Now comes a study demonstrating that botox is good for constipation due to dysfunction of muscles of the pelvic floor. Normally, such muscles are supposed to relax to facilitate dysfunction. In affected patients there is paradoxical contraction. This disorder is fairly common cause of constipation especially among females.
Dr. Maria and colleagues studied studied 24 women with functional outlet obstruction or functional obstructive defecation. Treatment involved injection of type A botulinum toxin. They published their findings in the American Journal of Gastroenterology (November 2006)
At 2-month follow-up, 19 of the 24 patients had improved defecation. The authors concluded that botox is simple, safe and effective treatment for such patients.
Are you familiar with botox? Do you or someone you know has had botox treatments? By the way, botox is used as a treatment for treatment of anal fissures also.

That's incredible news. What else can they use Botox for?
